on december 6, the “2023 electric power science and technology awards” were presented at the annual meeting of the china society for electrical engineering. the china energy led eight projects that received the 'electric power scientific and technological progress award.' among them, the project 'high-power magnetic levitation flywheel energy storage and fire storage joint frequency modulation key technology, equipment, and engineering application' won the first prize.

this award is one of the first 26 awards approved by the reform of the national science and technology awards, which involve various technical fields such as electrical, hydropower, thermal power, nuclear power, and renewable energy. it reflects the latest and highest achievements in the development of china's electric power technology and represents the forefront of international electric power technology development. it has become the most influential and authoritative award in china's electric power field.


the 'high-power magnetic levitation flywheel energy storage and fire storage joint frequency modulation key technology, equipment, and engineering application' project addresses the need for rapid, high-frequency, and high-precision participation of thermal power units in grid frequency modulation in new power systems. relying on two 600,000-kilowatt thermal power units of the ningxia power lingwu company of the china energy, the project successfully developed a 22-megawatt/4.5-megawatt-hour magnetic levitation flywheel energy storage system. after its operation, the first-frequency modulation qualification rate of thermal power units increased from 50%-70% to over 92%. the achievements have been appraised by the ministry of industry and information technology and the china society for electrical engineering, reaching the international leading level, being the first domestic initiative, and selected as a demonstration case for the 'three changes and linkage' by the state grid. it also participated in the formulation of four group standards, filling the gap in china's flywheel energy storage participation in thermal power frequency modulation.
